Old Shipwreck Discovered Off Ponte Vedra Beach PDF Print E-mail

Underwater archaeologists confirmed that a line of five iron ribs discovered recently in the shallow ocean off Ponte Vedra Beach may be the oiler Fortuna II that was stranded here in 1938. The shipwreck is under the sand and ocean that is only about 4 feet at low tide.

There are probably about 450 shipwrecks off the Northeast Florida coast. In fact, the sandbars offshore of the St. Augustine Fort  are home to more shipwrecks from the 16th and 17th century than any place in America except the Florida Keys.
